Maya Gracia  pieces are part of the permanent collection at

the International Museum of Folk Art - Santa Fe, New Mexico.

When the Spaniards and Portuguese set out to explore and conquer the New World for Crown and Church, their meager personal possessions included devotional items to inspire and comfort them on their journeys.  These items included ecclesiastical writings, rosaries, crosses, medals, retablos (religious paintings) and relicarios (small reliquary jewelry or encasements containing Christian imagery or relics).

Inspired by these antique Spanish treasures and other European Christian art, Maya Gracia Art Sacred offers:

  • Retablos of ecclesiastical themes painted on canvas, framed in wood and embellished with Maya Gracia signature style filigree metalwork (incorporating cabochons and jewels). A retablo is a term in Spanish ecclesiastical art (retable in modern English usage) for a painted panel on a ledge or shelf, raised slightly above the back of the Church altar or communion table.  Retablo paintings of the past, like triptychs, were also recreated in miniature form to be portable and quickly erected as traveling altars to the devout. Maya Gracia offers commissioned retablos of any size for church and home altar use, deeply grounded in Christian tradition.

  • Sacred Art Restoration and Conservation for Statues, Altar Pieces, Vestments and other Church Items.

  • Consultation for conservation, storage, placement and the reverent use of Liturgical Art in Interior Design.

  • Relicario Medals and Jewelry on lovingly crafted featherweight bases of enameled or plated, fine gauge metal filigree.   Designs incorporate cabochons that are cameo-like micro images of either the artist's original work, illuminated religious prints, or fine art.  Pieces feature fine Swarovski crystal stones, beads and pearls, and are also embellished with vintage glass jewels and exotic paillettes.  Jewelry findings are made of 18kt gold (or sterling silver) plated over brass.  Peinetas (large Spanish hair ornaments) have shaped, European composite tines to comfortably fit the contours of the head.  Many jewelry styles and medals are embellished on both sides to create heightened dimension during movement.

Maya Gracia also offers custom conservation and encasement of authentic relics by canon/museum specifications. (shown: dual-sided relic encasement)
